Memory Foam Vs. Innerspring Mattress
The purchase of a mattress could be a time consuming and overwhelming experience with the abundance of mattresses to chose from. New mattress technology has come about since the development of the innerspring mattress in the nineteenth century that has challenged the innerspring/coil structure of a bed. This article identifies some fundamental differences between innerspring and memory foam mattress that will shed some light on the subject.
Innerspring mattresses have been around since 1871 and are considered the prototypical mattresses. Since its introduction, the innerspring mattress has gone thru various improvements to meet the comfort demands of the consumer. As a result, it has double in size and weight due to all the comfort layers that manufactures put on their mattresses to overcome the inherently uncomfortable steel spring core. Inner spring coils are a metal spring structure designed to hold a person's weight. When you lie on a regular innerspring or conventional mattress, your own body weight pulls you down. The support, coils and springs react by pushing back against you resulting in your skin and blood vessels being caught in the middle. To compensate this reaction, manufactures have added multiple layers of padding in order to protect your body from the springs. This is what causes pressure points and poor circulation which leads to discomfort and pain over time. In the open spaces between the coils lies a potential mite and bacteria living space. A typical used innerspring mattress may have anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million mites inside of it. In contrast, a high quality memory foam mattress is naturally dust mite-resistant and anti-microbial keeping your mattress clean and sanitary. A memory foam mattress is designed to absorb your weight and reduce these pressure points as it contours your shape for even support.
The Memory foam mattress market is one of the fastest growing sectors in the industry today. Innovations in our manufacturing process have made it widely available and affordable to the public. It is a unique product with multiple health benefits for all ages. Also referred to as Visco-elastic foam, this temperature sensitive foam will mould to your body within minutes of laying down. Memory foam is the top layer of the mattress which is made of open cell technology that contours your body in any position. It's a foam comprised of billions of tiny air-filled cells. These cells compress when you lie down with the air moving slowly from cell to cell allowing some to fully compress while others expand. When you move, the memory foam simply takes up air again. You will feel like you're suspended in mid-air yet will be completely supported from head to toe. While the memory foam conforms to the curves of your body the AirFlow foam layer (available in most of our mattresses) provides added air movement achieving a superb temperature management system. The High Density (H-D) foam base provides the necessary support for the top layers to function as intended. Our H-D foam base is made of synthetic High Density (H-D) foam that does not include inner springs or coils. Its density makes our mattresses heavier than the conventional innerspring mattress but will last much longer. The advantages of our H-D foam base is its longevity and its natural ability to resist dust-mites and bacteria. Ideal for an allergy sufferer to sleep on.

Brief History of Memory Foam
Memory foam is fairly new product with advanced technology originally developed by NASA in the 1970. It's original intent was to ease the pressure of extreme G-force during space shuttle take off. It was subsequently used in medical applications for patients suffering from pressure sores or bed-bound for a long period. A unique product to the market, Tempur-Pedic® was the first to realize its potential for the consumer market. As the pioneer, Tempur-Pedic® invested millions of dollars to create their foam product with a high price tag. In recent years other manufactures have joined Tempur-Pedic® in developing memory foam products at a fraction of the cost. In todays market, there are manufactures all over the world producing their version of memory foam. However, not all memroy foams are equal. They differ in quality, durability and longevity. These are important factors to look at before making a significant investment such as a memory foam mattress.
The following articles will inform and assist you to make the best decision for your personal needs.

Mattress Density and Thickness
A memory foam mattress is made of at least two components; the memory foam layer and base layer. The memory foam is the top layer that contours your body and evenly distributes your body weight for pressure-free sleep. It is temperature sensitive and softens as it becomes warmer from your body heat. The High Density (H-D) foam base supports the top layer (maintaning the integrity of memory foam) and provides proper spine alignment support. The memory foam layer is the most important layer of the mattress. This is the layer that contours your body's shape and provides cushioned support.
The density is the key factor for the memory foam layer and should be displayed on the information provided by the manufacture or retailer. Memory foam density is measured in pounds per cubic foot and is a good indicator of the quality of the memory foam. Higher density foam mattresses cost more but also last longer and offer better support. Density ratings generally range from 2.5 lbs to 8 lbs with the higher density being the most firm, supportive and higher quality. A recommended density is in the 5 lb to 5.5 lb range for the average person. Keep in mind that denser memory foam costs more to make but will have more of the 'memory' foam. This might be a consideration for a heavier individual. In this case you want to look at our 4-Layer mattresses which include 2 layers of memory foam at varying densities. Few manufactures offer multiple top layers of varying density for maximum support and more durability. With the exception of our Designer 8", all our mattresses are a 3-Layer or 4-Layer design with a density range of 5lbs. to 8lbs.
The thickness is another consideration when deciding on a memory foam mattress. Mattress overall height generally ranges from 8" to 15", however the thickness we are referring to is the top layer memory foam. A good recommendation on this point is a thickness between 2½" to 4½". One of our best selling beds, the Deluxe 10", is a 3-Layer Design with 3"/5lb memory foam top layer, a 1½" AirFlow foam and a 5½" H-D foam base.
If you desire an additional comfort layer then take a look at our 4-Layer Design mattreseses included in our Luxury Collection and Prestigious Collection. For most people, a 3" thickness memory foam is sufficient amount of material to cushion and conform to your body.

Picking a Foundation
What is under your mattress is also important. All foam mattresses are designed to contour the shape of what ever is applying pressure. If using an old and uneven foundation, the mattress takes the foundation's shape and becomes uneven itself. Even a high quality mattress such as ours will become an uneven surface to sleep on without a proper foundation. This could become an unhealthy sleeping surface and defeat the purpose of a memory foam mattress. For your convenience, we offer foundations to be purchased with any of our mattresses. This option is located within each Product Page/Add To Cart section. Simply select the mattress size of your choice and the matching foundation for a complete set.
Foundations have a limited life-term just like your mattress. A proper foundation can extend the life of your mattress. If you are replacing your old mattress, most likelly the foundation needs to be replaced as well.

Mattress Consideration
No memory foam mattress can cure your sleep disorder permanently. However, it can provide relief where other mattresses have failed. Many consumers have stated that their memory foam sleep system has permitted them to sleep longer, awaken fewer times during the night and provide comfort and relief from their every day aches and pains.
Use your sleep hours wisely....It's worth the investment.
