What is Memory Foam?
The Memory foam market is one of the fastest growing sectors in the industry today. Innovations in our manufacturing process have made it widely available and affordable to the public. It is a unique product with multiple health benefits for all ages.
Memory foam is the top layer of the mattress or an individual topper which is made of open cell technology that contours your body in any position. Also referred to as Visco-elastic foam, this temperature sensitive foam will mould to your body within minutes of laying down. It is comprised of billions of tiny air-filled cells. These cells compress when you lie down with the air moving slowly from cell to cell allowing some to fully compress while others expand. When you move, the memory foam simply takes up air again. You will feel like you're suspended in mid-air yet you will be completely supported from head to toe.
A memory foam mattress is made of at least two components; the memory foam layer and base layer. The memory foam is the top layer that contours your body and evenly distributes your body weight for pressure-free sleep as described above. It is temperature sensitive and softens as it becomes warmer from your body heat. The High Density (H-D) foam base supports the top layer (maintaning the integrity of memory foam) and provides proper spine alignment support. The advantages of our H-D foam base is its longevity and its natural ability to resist dust-mites and bacteria. Ideal for an allergy sufferer to sleep on.
The memory foam layer is the most important layer of the mattress. This is the layer that contours your body's shape and provides cushioned support. Read below for mattress Density and Thickness recommendations.
Memory Foam Density and Thickness
The density is the key factor for the memory foam layer and should be displayed on the information provided by the manufacture or retailer. Memory foam density is measured in pounds per cubic foot and is a good indicator of the quality of the memory foam. Higher density foam mattresses cost more but also last longer and offer better support. Density ratings generally range from 2.5 lbs to 8 lbs with the higher density being the most firm, supportive and higher quality. A recommended density is in the 5 lb to 5.5 lb range for the average person. Keep in mind that denser memory foam costs more to make but will have more of the 'memory' foam. This might be a consideration for a heavier individual. In this case you want to look at our 4-Layer mattresses which include 2 layers of memory foam at varying densities. We are one of the few retail stores that offer multiple top layers of varying density. With the exception of our Designer 8", all our mattresses are a 3-Layer or 4-Layer design with a density range of 5lbs. to 8lbs.
The thickness is another consideration when deciding on a memory foam mattress. Mattress overall height generally ranges from 8" to 15", however the thickness we are referring to is the top memory foam layer. A good recommendation on this point is a thickness between 2½" to 4½". One of our best selling beds, the Deluxe 10", is a 3-Layer Design with 3"/5lb memory foam top layer, a 1½" AirFlow foam and a 5½" H-D foam base.
If you desire an additional comfort layer, take a look at our 4-Layer Design mattreseses included in our Luxury Collection and Prestigious Collection. For most people, a 3" thickness memory foam is sufficient amount of material to cushion and conform to your body.
